چکیده
Tail-biting is an abnormal behavior of multifactorial origin, that consists a major problem in modern pig industry. It has serious impact on both welfare and health status the pigs involved, as well economic profitability farm. considered to be adaptation poor environment triggered by plethora external internal risk factors interacting with each other. A great variation exists prevalence tail biting between different studies across world. Tail docking common practice applied farmers prevent this behavior, while treatments are based enrichment material provision. The aim review explore most recent literature impacts discuss promising areas early prediction treatment topic.

Tail Biting in Pigs
Tail biting represents both a major animal welfare and economic problem for the pig industry with losses due to reduced weight gain, increased on-farm veterinary treatment, culling and carcass condemnation. Tail biting has a multifactorial origin. It is known to be sporadic, making outbreaks difficult to predict and understand, even within the same facilities and under similar management system...

Normal pig behaviour does not include tail biting. The occurrence of tail biting is a complex and multi-factorial problem and many risk factors are known to increase the chance of tail biting. In an attempt to prevent ...
متن کاملManaging undocked pigs – on-farm prevention of tail biting and attitudes towards tail biting and docking
BACKGROUND Tail biting is a common and serious welfare problem in pig production, causing large economical losses. Tail docking is performed routinely in most EU countries to reduce the tail biting risk. However, tail docking is painful, and does not prevent tail biting totally. The risk factors behind tail docking are multifactorial and most analyses are based on studies using biological or ep...
متن کاملFactors identifying pigs predisposed to tail biting
Approximately 5% of pigs slaughtered in the UK have been tail-bitten, leading to welfare and production issues. Tail biting is sporadic and not all pigs tail bite. The aim of this study was to identify factors that are common in pigs that perform tail-biting behaviour, and that might be used in a predictive way to identify such animals. The behaviour of 159 pigs was observed in the post-weaning...
متن کاملBehavioural and Brain Gene Expression Profiling in Pigs during Tail Biting Outbreaks – Evidence of a Tail Biting Resistant Phenotype
Abnormal tail biting behaviour is a major welfare problem for pigs receiving the behaviour, as well as an indication of decreased welfare in the pigs performing it. However, not all pigs in a pen perform or receive tail biting behaviour and it has recently been shown that these 'neutral' pigs not only differ in their behaviour, but also in their gene expression compared to performers and receiv...
